How It Works

Clear, simple steps so you know what to expect.

A New Kind of Therapy

BeCalm Counseling is designed for clients who need more structured, active support than traditional therapy.

I work with individuals who have a history of trauma, high emotional intensity, or patterns that have not improved with past counseling. Many clients come in feeling overwhelmed, constantly “on,” or stuck in cycles they can’t shift.

This work is grounded in DBT, which focuses on real-life skills for managing emotions, reducing reactivity, and creating stability. We also look at deeper patterns, including identity, relationships, and long-term behavioral cycles.

DBT is a process that requires mutual honesty and radical authenticity. This is not a passive experience. Therapy is collaborative, with direct communication and honest feedback.

Many people try to treat anxiety or depression without realizing that a childhood full of stress, tension, or inconsistency can shape the nervous system and create lifelong patterns of avoidance, reactivity, or emotional numbing. This work focuses on understanding and healing those patterns, not just managing symptoms.

I also work with substance use and behavioral addictions. As someone in recovery myself, I understand the difference between stopping a behavior and addressing what drives it. Sobriety is a critical first step, and peer support groups are often an important part of that process. Therapy is where we address the underlying patterns, emotional drivers, and nervous system responses that keep cycles going.

This approach is a good fit for clients who:

  • Have experienced trauma
  • Feel emotionally overwhelmed or reactive
  • Have not found past therapy helpful
  • Are navigating substance use or behavioral addictions
  • Feel constantly activated or unable to slow down

Therapy here is active, structured, and focused on meaningful, lasting change.

A Bit About Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that builds on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) but goes further. It focuses not only on thoughts and behaviors, but also on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, relational patterns, and nervous system responses.

Rather than staying at the level of insight, DBT emphasizes practical skills that can be used in real time. The goal is not just to understand why you feel the way you do, but to help you respond differently and create stability in your day-to-day life.

DBT also balances acceptance and change. You are doing the best you can, and change is still necessary. This is one of the reasons it is effective for clients who have struggled with anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, emotional reactivity, or numbness over time.

Sessions are conducted via secure telehealth for clients in Indiana and Florida.

STRUCTURE

Together, we identify the patterns, coping strategies, and nervous system responses that are maintaining current difficulties.

Sessions are typically weekly and structured. Treatment is informed by Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), attachment theory, trauma research, and existential psychology. The focus is on emotional regulation, behavior change, relationships, and building a life that feels meaningful and aligned with your values.

This is an active process. Therapy is not simply talking about problems. Clients are encouraged to practice new skills and apply what we discuss between sessions.

RELATIONSHIP

Therapy works best when it is a collaborative process. My role is to provide structure, support, perspective, and accountability. Your role is to bring honesty, curiosity, and a willingness to practice.

I strive to be both kind and direct. Growth requires compassion, but it also requires honesty. Together, we address obstacles openly and work toward meaningful change.

Homework and Between-Session Support

Therapy does not happen only during the session. After most appointments, clients receive an email with reflections, resources, and recommendations tailored to their goals.

Homework may include readings, worksheets, skills practice, journaling, or applying new behaviors in everyday life. Brief between-session support is available when appropriate to help maintain momentum. Family education and collaboration with other providers can also be incorporated when it would support treatment goals and improve outcomes.

Clients who actively engage in the work between sessions often experience greater progress and may require fewer sessions over time.

Why This Approach Works

Research consistently shows that therapy is most effective when clients are actively engaged in treatment and when there is a strong therapeutic relationship.

Lasting change is created through insight, practice, accountability, and repetition. Rather than simply managing symptoms, the goal is to help clients develop new patterns that support long-term growth and well-being.

This approach is designed to help clients become more independent, not more dependent on therapy.

Time

Most emotional struggles develop over years, not weeks. Because of that, meaningful change rarely happens quickly.

This is not short-term work. Lasting change is built through consistency, practice, and the therapeutic relationship over time.

Progress is rarely linear. Setbacks are viewed as opportunities for learning rather than evidence of failure.

Investing in yourself is one of the most important investments you can make. My goal is not to keep clients in therapy indefinitely. My goal is to help you create lasting change and build a life that feels more peaceful, connected, and fulfilling.
